Banff Bridge, A98, River Deveron - 21st March 2026

Built in 1779, the Banff Bridge or Bridge of Banff is a historic Grade A listed structure carries the A98 road across the River Deveron connecting the coastal towns of Macduff and Banff.

The seven span segmental masonry arch bridge was widened 1881 due to increased traffic using local sourced quarried stone.

In early 2024 a report from Infrastructure Services Committee placed the bridge at a heightened risk of "Red" alert status meaning that if not given attention it was likely that the bridge would close in 5 years time from scour / undermining foundations.

In 2025 £3m of works started which would involve the construction of rock rolls and rock mattresses at the base of each of the piers and abutments.

There is ongoing discussions and plans being put into place between Aberdeenshire Council and Moxon Architects for the final design of a new dedicated cycle and foot bridge to the north of the existing historic bridge but as of 2026 nothing has been formally announced.
